Oats
Koala
SeedNet
Koala Oat is a high yielding grain oat variety with mid-late maturity and medium-tall plant type. As a late maturing variety Koala performs best in the medium to high rainfall zones and it is described as a tall dwarf variety, similar in height at maturity as Bannister, so it could alternatively be considered for hay production if seasonal conditions were conducive. Bred by crossing the highly successful milling oat variety Bannister with a breeding line derived from Mitika, Possum and Potoroo, Koala was promoted through the SARDI breeding program based on its grain yield, grain quality and disease resistance. In terms of disease profile, Koala has resistance to cereal cyst nematode and is less susceptible than Bannister to stem rust MR-MS, Crown Rust MR, bacterial blight S, barley yellow dwarf virus MS-S and septoria blight MS-S. Bred for milling use and has entered in milling evaluation program.
Archer
Intergrain
Archer is a single gene IMI tolerant oaten hay variety, an ideal variety for use where there are IMI residue concerns from previous crops. Sentry ® is currently registered for pre-planting incorporation by seeding (IBS) for hay and seed production only. Archer is a mid-maturing oaten hay variety suitable for planting in the major hay growing regions of Australia. The variety is a medium height variety, with good early vigour and hay colour retention. Preliminary data indicates that Archer has a similar disease profile to Yallara, being moderately resistant to stem rust, moderate resistant to leaf rust in Western Australia. Preliminary data indicates CNN in Archer may require proactive rotational management. Sentry ® is currently registered for pre-planting incorporation by seeding (IBS) for hay, forage, seed and grain (domestic feed market only) production. Excess grain, seed and screenings produced from single gene IMI oaten hay varieties, Kingbale and Archer, can be used for the domestic oaten grain feed markets and/or consumed on-farm. Grain of these varieties cannot be delivered into bulk handing systems.
